ZYX SB1 and SB2 Ballast Weights
When specifying the higher models of ZYX cartridges we always recommend the use of the SB (Silver Base) weights to give our clients the best possible sound from their cartridges.
Years ago when I first used ZYX cartridges I did some experiments with arm resonance and I found the addition of these weights to reduce the resonance by several Hertz in typical arms such as SME V and Linn Ekos. This gives better defined and faster bass and a cleaner sound throughout the frequency range. They are designed to fit the cartridge profile internally and give a better interface to the headshell.
As they are bonded internally to the cartridge they are factory fitted and therefore must be specified at time of order.
SB1 (4.2g) is designed for the triangular bodied cartridges and SB2 (4.0g) for the 4D bodies.

ZYX also now make tin bases that have a similar effect on lower cost models and offer good value.
